The tunnels behind Niagara Falls

Did you know that there were abandoned tunnels behind Niagara Falls? No, not the ones that you go through when you pay for the trip on the Journey Behind The Falls attraction. The tunnels I’m talking about are even more mysterious, completely hidden from the naked eye, and very cool.
According to Sleepy City, the tunnels date back to 1906 or earlier and are lined with red brick in an insanely precise way. Dubbed the “tailrace tunnels”, a team of three from Sleepy Tunnels decided to document the treacherous decent into these tunnels — a drop of more than 10 stories.

The junction is an immense underground space, I’ve never been anywhere like it. Again the details are striking – acutely angled steel plates layer over the brick wedge where the tunnels merge. Metal supports hang from the ceiling which appear to have originally suspended a walkway. Having seen the walkways above the wheel pit I’m scared at the mere thought of one in the tailrace.

Here is the same tunnel in 1906.
Read the personal account of the trip at Sleepy City and check out their great photos. Definitely something to take the time out to read.
Also, take a look at this fantastic shot on top of the Manhattan Bridge in NYC. WOW. Just, wow. Sleepy City is friggin’ all over the world!
