It might come as a surprise to most Americans, but cricket has produced some of the most absurdly long contests in sports history. Depending on the rules, a game is only over after one side has scored more runs and dismissed all of the opposition’s batsmen, but most modern cricket matches allow for a draw to be called after a certain amount of time has elapsed.

This was once not the case with Test match cricket, the more grueling version of the game played by international teams. Test matches are usually scheduled for at least five days, at which point the highest scoring team is declared the winner. In some of the early Tests, Cricket was played in the same “timeless” style as baseball, which allowed for matches to go on indefinitely until one team won it all. This is exactly what happened in 1939 in Durban, South Africa, when England and South Africa competed in what is now known as “The Longest Test.” The match started on March 3, and continued on for a further nine days (two off days and a rain-out day were also included) with neither team able to close things out. By the 12^th day, England was poised to take the win with a record 654 runs, but the match had to be called off in order for the English players to catch their boat ride back home. It was only then that “the Longest Test” was finally declared a draw.

Longest traffic jam at 100 kilometres (and 10 days) long World Record

If you are bracing yourself for the annual Bank Holiday traffic this
weekend, spare a thought for the drivers on China's Beijing -
Zhangjiakou highway in their 10th day of being stuck in a 60-mile
traffic jam.



Local officials have warned that the jam, on a highway that connects
Beijing to Inner Mongolia, could continue for some time yet as the
construction that has been blamed for the gridlock won't be finished
until September 17.





The traffic jam started on August 14 on a stretch of road that has been
frequently congested, especially after large coalfields were discovered
in Inner Mongolia.



The 60-mile tailback is starting to move, albeit slowly, but at the
moment it's not classed as the world's longest or busiest traffic jam.



According to the Guinness Book of World Records those dubious records
belong to France and Germany. The longest ever reported was that which
stretched 109 miles northwards from Lyon towards Paris, France on
February 16 1980



And a record traffic jam of 18 million cars crawling bumper-to-bumper
was reported on the East-West German border on April 12 1990.



Traffic jams are not a new phenomenon either. Julius Caesar banned carts
and chariots from Rome during daytime in the first century BC.



The Highways Agency doesn't keep records of Britain's longest or busiest
traffic jams, but for drivers heading out on the motorways for the Bank
Holiday a spokesman said, 'We generally try to lift roadworks over busy
periods', so hopefully we won't see anything like the chaos in China.

Longest Time Kiss World Record attempt by Will Matty and Bobby NJ USA

In 2009, Germany's Nikola Matovic and Kristina Reinhart kissed for 32 hours, 7 minutes, 14 seconds. New Jersey college students and self-professed LGBT activists Matty and Bobby are hoping to break that Guinness World Record today with 33 hours of smooching. And no, they aren't boyfriends. (Update: It's been rescheduled.)

They've been training by standing still and staying awake. And if they don't manage to break the record, they're committed to trying again. But what about this boyfriend Bobby has? "Yes, I am in a relationship and my boyfriend supports the cause completely," Bobby says. "We all know each other, and we’re very close friends." (As for Matty, he'd "like to keep the status of his personal life his own priority during this excursion.")

So the only question that remains is: Do they have to be tonguing each other the whole time? Not necessarily, but their lips must stay together.

They'll be performing (appearing?) today — and, with their goal of 33 hours, tomorrow — at Alumni Grove of The College of New Jersey Campus in Ewing, New Jersey.

1. The Kiss must be continuous and the lips must be touching @ all times.
2. If the lips part – the couple is immediately disqualified
3. Contestants must be over the age of consent in the country the event is being held.
4. The couple must be awake @ all times.
5. The contestants must stand during the attempt and cannot be propped together by any aids, such as pillows, cushions or people.
6. No breaks are allowed.
7. Incontinance pads or adult nappies/diapers are not allowed.
8. Couples must not leave the venue during their attempt.

Also worth noting: The pair insist they've never kissed before. So this shouldn't be awkward or anything.

Longest Continuous Broadcast World Record set by Nikora Curtis

A radio DJ in Tolaga Bay, near Gisborne, has broken the world record for the longest continuous broadcast.

Nikora Curtis had to go for more than 175 hours to beat the record – that's more than a week.

This afternoon he achieved it.

Drowsy,
delirious, but still dedicated – Nikora Curtis was on the airwaves for
seven days so he could be forgiven for losing track.

He
broadcasted day and night – even through a power cut during the week's
heavy rain – all to raise funds to keep his community station Uawa FM
on air.

Just after one o'clock this afternoon, playing records became record-breaking.

Tolaga Bay locals gathered in the town to share the moment with their
exhausted hero – and then Mr Curtis went back for another hour and a
half.

It
will take a few weeks before the world record is officially verified
but one thing is for sure – the community is immensely proud of Nikora
Curtis.

Longest Barbecue Record

The 'God-grilla', above, took three months to make and can cook a staggering 500 burgers at once. It weighs almost two tonnes and can heat up to a sweltering 500 degrees centigrade

A British engineer has unveiled the world's largest barbecue, a £10,000 monster dubbed 'God-grilla' which can cook a staggering 1,000 sausages at once.

Jack Henriques, 31, spent three months welding the bespoke steel grill, which weighs two tonnes, measures 16ft across and requires 14 bags of coal to ignite.

The 11ft tall barbecue is so big it can cook seven whole lambs, three pigs or two cows at the same time.

Jack, who runs the Bespoke BBQ Company, has pledged to build an even larger unit in future

and says the 'sky is the limit'.

He said: 'When the barbecue is loaded up to full capacity at least three chefs are needed and it would be impossible to flip everything on your own.

'It does get extremely hot and you often have to cover your face because you are standing just a few feet away from a big wall of flame which can cook a cow.

'We think the hottest temperature it has reached is about 500 degrees centigrade because the paint on the steel is heatproofed up to 600 and it has never cracked.

'I have never seen or heard of a bigger fixed barbecue. This is the biggest one I've made yet but I'm sure we will go much larger in the future.'

Jack built a giant barbecue for himself in April 2008 and the grill was such a success that friends persuaded him to go into business.

He launched the Bespoke BBQ Company from his workshop in the Cotswolds and completed God-grilla in May this year.

It measures 16.4ft (5m) long, by 4.9ft (1.9m) wide and its twin chimneys - which can be fitted with extractor fans - stand 11.5ft (3.5m) tall.

Each of the seven coal trays is fixed to a custom-built scissor jack which can be raised or lowered using a turning handle.

This ensures that the cooking temperature can be easily changed for each tray without the difficulty of moving and disturbing the meat.

The cooker also features abattoir-style meat hooks on which whole animal carcasses can be hung for cooking.

God-grilla - which can grill 500 burgers at once - was commissioned by the Stone Barn, a wedding venue in the Cotswolds village of Aldsworth, Glos.

Jack's brother Mark, who runs Cripps Catering and manages the barn, confirmed that the jacks give 'infinite' cooking control.

He said: 'The idea of using a jack to raise and lower the coals is Jack's trademark on his bespoke barbecues and, even with a grill that is heavy with meat, it gives one infinite control.'

God-grilla is the largest fixed barbecue in the world - there is a larger lorry barbecue in Texas, USA, but this is a smoker rather than a traditional coal grill.

World’s Longest Ceramic Painting in the world at Hanoi Ceramic Road

Nguyen Thu Thuy, the author of the Hanoi ceramic road project, said that her group is about to submit the project to the World Guinness Book to recognize the road as the world’s longest ceramic painting in the world.

The road is nearly 4 kilometers long, totaling around 7,000 square meters. Around 95 percent of the painting has been completed.

The painting includes 21 sections, running on the wall of the dike along the Red River, with various topics: honoring Vietnam’s history through patterns of the Ly, Tran, Le, and Nguyen dynasties; typical patterns on brocade, ceramic paintings of Hanoi by Vietnamese and international children; and contemporary paintings by Vietnamese and foreign artists.

Thuy said that the project was warmly supported by many Vietnamese artists and nearly 100 foreign artists. It is funded by nearly 30 companies. This is a special work to celebrate Hanoi’s 1000^th anniversary.

A list of the top five longest rivers in the world.

1. Nile River – 4,160 miles (6,695 km)

Located in Northeast Africa, it is the world’s longest river.  The river got its name from the Greek word Neilos, which means “valley”.  It flows past Cairo and many more large cities.  There are four major dams along the Nile River includes there Roseires Dam, Sennar Dam, Aswan High Dam, and Owen Falls Dam.  Crocodiles and Fishing Eagles are very common along the Nile River.

2. Amazon River – 4,000 miles (6,437 km)

Located in South America, the Amazon carries more water that any other river.  The Amazon river is also anywhere from 4 to 6 miles wide, giving it the name of the widest river in the world.  It is not uncommon to see piranhas and anacondas in the Amazon River.  There have been many tales of anacondas attacking fisherman, although it is rare for this species of snake to attack a human unless it feels threatened.

3. Yangzte River - 3,900 miles (6,275 km)

Located in China, the Yangzte River is the largest and the longest river in China.  Approximately 350 million people live in the Yangzte River area, and for centuries, this large river has been the main source of fresh water for villages nearby.  It flows west to east and through the large city of Shanghai where tourists can take boat tours up and down the river.

4. Huang He River - 3,000 miles (4,830 km)

Located in China, the Huang He River is also known as the “Yellow River” because of the large deposits of yellow silt along its banks

.  The second longest river in China, it flows east to the Yellow Sea.  In the 1950s, dams began to be built to exploit the river’s hydroelectric energy, and continue to be successful generating renewable energy.

5. Ob-Irtysh River – 3,360 miles (5,410 km)

World's longest living marriage (85 years)

Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher, of North Carolina, have been married for 85 years as of May 13, 2009. Zelmyra is 101 years old and Herbert turned 104 on June 10th, 2009. They have shared the same home in the Brownsville community of New Bern for 50 years. (Link)

Angelo Cammarata is, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world's longest-serving bartender. He's been pouring for most of his 77 years at Cammarata's Café, the West View watering hole. But now, the place he still helps his sons John and Frank run, has been sold, and the Cammaratas will be out of there within weeks, when the new owners are approved by the state. "Camm," as people call him, started serving beer at his father's North Side grocery the moment Prohibition ended, at midnight on April 7, 1933. The memory is as clear to him as the strike of the library clock that signaled it was time to start opening bottles of Fort Pitt. His immigrant father built a bar on that site in 1935, and Angelo kept working there, taking a break to serve in the Navy in World War II. In 1971 he sold the bar to his sons. In September 2009, the Café was sold and Camm, 95, decided it was time to retire. (Link)

World's longest point in professional tennis (29 minutes)

This year, 2009, marks the 25th anniversary of a historic tennis match. At a Virginia Slims tournament in 1984, Vicki Nelson and Jean Hepner exchanged 643 shots. It remains the longest single rally in the history of professional tennis. The 6-hour-31-minute marathon was itself the longest match in tennis history for nearly 20 years and remains the longest match completed on a single day. The rally that put Nelson-Dunbar and Hepner in the record books came at set point for Hepner, who was ahead in the second-set tie breaker, which lasted 1:47 on its own. The 13-11 tiebreaker lasted 1 hour 47 minutes - the longest in the history of professional tennis - and had one point that lasted 29 minutes, with the ball crossing the net 643 times. World's longest speech (124 hours)

Frenchman Lluis Colet broke the world record for the longest speech after rambling nonstop for 124 hours about Spanish painter Salvador Dali, Catalan culture and other topics. The 62-year-old Catalan and local government worker spoke for five straight days and four nights to set the record in the southern French town of Perpignan. Three notaries were on hand to recognize the feat which allowed Colet to enter in the Guinness Book of Records. The previous record was held by an Indian man who delivered a 120-hour speech. (Link)

World's longest burning lightbulb (107 years)

The world's longest lightbulb, a low-watt firehouse bulb, has been burning continuously since 1901. Long after his retirement, ex-firefighter Tom Bramell still likes to visit Station No. 6 for old times' sake, whistling in amazement at all the changes. But one thing remains exactly the same. The sturdy little object hangs from the ceiling in the firehouse's engine bay, emitting its familiar faint orange glow. At 107 years and counting, the low-watt wonder with the curlicue carbon filament has been named the planet's longest continuously burning bulb by both Guinness World Records and Ripley's Believe It Or Not.The Livermore lightbulb has never been turned off, which many suspect is the secret to its longevity. World's longest movie (87 hours)

Directed by John Henry Timmis IV, "The Cure for Insomnia" is officially the world's longest movie, according to Guinness World Records, as of its release in 1987. Running 5220 minutes (87 hours) in length, the movie has no plot, instead consisting of artist L. D. Groban reading his lengthy poem of the same name over the course of three and a half days, spliced with occasional clips from heavy metal and pornographic videos. (Link Photo)

World's longest running soap opera (72 years)

The world's longest running soap opera, Guiding Light, has been on for 72 years following the lives of four families in America. Starting out as a radio play in 1937 before graduating to CBS daytime TV in 1952, it was funded by Procter & Gamble, which employed Irna Phillips, the "mother of the genre", to write it. In the mid-60s, it was one of the first soaps to feature African-American actors in regular roles. Its fictional "anywhere America" location moved around until 1966, when it settled in a town called Springfield. Kevin Bacon, Calista Flockhart and Mickey Rourke all started out on the show. The show won dozens of awards in its seven-decade span and ran up more than 15,700 episodes, each ending in a cliffhanger. (Link)

Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, 81, is the world's longest-reigning monarch. He ascended to the throne following the death of his brother, King Ananda Mahidol, on June 9, 1946, and was formally crowned on May 5, 1950. Thailand abolished absolute monarchy in the 1930s, so the king wields little power although he recently appealed for unity amid Thailand's four-year-long political crisis. In 1998 Auckland had a blackout power crisis for five weeks. Almost all of downtown Auckland in New Zealand was supplied electricity by Mercury Energy via four power cables, two of them 40-year-old oil-filled cables that were past their replacement date. One of the cables failed on January 20, possibly due to the unusually hot and dry conditions, another on February 9. Due to the increased load from the failure of the first cables, the remaining two failed on February 19 and 20, leaving about 20 city blocks (except parts of a few streets) without power during 66 days. 7500 businesses and residents were affected. Next time your fiancée starts to bug you about the wedding date you can comfort her by telling her about Octavio Guillen and Adriana Martinez, who hold the record for the world's longest engagemant and quite possibly, the world's coldest feet. Octavio Guillen and Adriana Martinez were engaged in Mexico in 1902 ,but kept putting the wedding off over and over again. After 67 years, in June 1969, Octavio Guillen must have run out of excuses and the world's longest engagement ended with their vows. The solar eclipse of July 22, 2009 was the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century, lasting as much as 6 minutes and 39 seconds in some places. It caused tourist interest in eastern China, Nepal and India. In some parts of the continent, the moon completely blocked out the sun for more than six-and-a-half minutes. The eclipse - the longest since July 1991 - was visible in India, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh, Bhutan and China.
